When Colin the pig began to dispense wisdom and advice from his position on a stake, I could not contain my sheer wonder and joy. He’s not typically center stage, but his character is a wonderful seasoning for the larger stories that he is a part of.

  2. mulherin says on :

My favorite Fables character is Frau Totenkinder. I’m reading in trade, so I very well may be behind the times, but I think Willingham’s done a great job of developing her character in such a way that I frequently have to remind myself that there’s something sinister about her and that the Fabletown characters should have been more careful inviting her into their inner circle than they have been. It’s a nice tension to have as a reader.

  3. slayerono says on :

I’d have to say my favorite Fables Character is Cinderella, the mild mannered shoe store owner who moonlights as an international super spy is just awesome. The idea that she has been practicing and perfecting these covert operations for longer than most mundy spies have been alive is a really cool back story.

  4. bradalmanac says on :

I’d have to go with Boy Blue… his entire arc is/was so wonderfully done. Loved how the layers were peeled away to show that a simple office clerk was so much more, with not just a heroic past but an even more heroic future to come. Throw in his withstanding a healthy dose of tragic pain (both physical and emotional), waging a one-man war on the adversary, not to mention his appreciation for good comic books, and that’s one hell of an irresistible character.

  5. allsnac90 says on :

With many beautifully complex characters to choose from, I figure I’ll go with the worst, Geppetto. To some he may just be a deeply inhuman tyrant, but others, me being one of them, sees more. I see a STILL loving father. He never stopped and never will. He just expanded from one wooden boy to all living creatures in any known world. His empire was his family, loving and secure, even if held by fear and violence. He still needs this family today; he just needs to eliminate the black sheep from last time. While his methods are disturbing and vile, I cannot help but understand why this man does what he does, love. Whether it is true or false doesn’t matter, he knows that his love and care eliminates chaos and brings s certain serenity to life that cannot exist without him. And both he and I are proven right, as seen in the release of Mr. Dark. This devotion and passion is something I believe everyone should have in there lives, whether to people or hobbies. Though it would be much appreciated if we could go without the tyranny, murder, genocide and other countless crimes Geppetto committed.

  6. norrin2 says on :

Jack of Fables. He’s such a lovable reprobate. Plus I loved all those Jack tales when I was a kid.

  7. thegirlcalledkill says on :

It is so hard to chose! but i love Rose Red. I love that she can love and forget, forget the past, and put family first.
I also loved watching her character change and evolve the most! i love seeing what she has become

  8. randyhate says on :

wow… this has changed over time for sure, but i am happy to say that right now it is flycatcher/king ambrose. i love how his arc has played and how he never even thought to blink in face of such adversity during the good prince books.

i am sure it will change again, but if it does not i am perfectly content to think highly of orange jumpsuits.

  9. jfgn says on :

This is gonna be short but I’ll have to say Snowhite she’s been a every strong charactor since the beginning of series and she brings out the best in the series and if Bill Willingham ever killed her off let’s just say a lot of hate mail and that’s about it good luck eveybody

  10. mthree says on :

Definitely Cinderella! I mean she’s a secret agent and her cover is the shop owner of a shoe store called the Glass Slipper. It doesn’t get any better than that. This take on her makes her so much more interesting.

  11. uncannyfable says on :

Rose Red would be my favorite. Willingham makes it beyond easy to connect with her, and feel comfortable with her. Who wouldn’t want her as an Aunt, or Sister?

  12. CPav says on :

Snow. She’s a strong woman, and beautiful, but loving and caring as well.

  13. jkopin says on :

Oh man, Boy Blue! Boy Blue! Everything about his story, everything, is quite simply riveting- it was hard to imagine Fables without him and, now that he’s gone, its tough to believe that its really true. There’s something else, something about his characterization that’s just fantastic- he’s our exact opposite. Comics are often perceived as simply adolescent power fantasies and, although it is an over-simplification, it is true to a certain, small, extent. Rather than being a regular guy who wanted to be a hero, however, Blue was just the opposite- a hero who wanted to be a regular guy.

And that’s just a stroke of genius.

  14. juannavarro says on :

For me it has to be Bigby, or Big B, however you want to say it. He’s gruff and dangerous, with a bad past, but uses all that for good now. He takes charge of things but still has weaknesses.

  15. comixguru says on :

There are so many great characters to choose from… but my favorite is Bigby Wolf. He has a good heart.

  16. marksullivan5 says on :

I’ve had lots of favorites over the years. But right now, I’d have to name Cinderella. I really enjoyed the revelation that she has become a superspy, and look forward to her miniseries.

  17. deb8er says on :

My favorite character is Prince Charming. The guy is the biggest scoundrel in the book, but I can’t help but feeling that he is completely misunderstood.

  18. liquidhavok says on :

Has to be Bigby. There’s something about him changing his ways after those untold years of violence and anger, and working WITH humanity for the better. His sort of redemption is fascinating, and the Snow/Bigby love story is easily the best arc in Fables.

  19. ellis84 says on :

I’ve always enjoyed Buffkin for his comic relief abilities, and enjoyed seeing him flit about Snow’s office causing trouble. I’m really loving Buffkins resolve to take on the big baddies in the office now. My second favorite is Babe and his trippy daydreams over in Jack of Fables. That lil blue guy is hilarious!

  20. muteddragon says on :

Clara: sleeping dragon that’s a bad-arse dragon when awake, turned into the fire breathing raven. Aren’t you curious on what she dreamt about?

  21. aztekthelost says on :

I don’t know if Gary counts seeing as he first appeared in Jack of Fables, so in that case, of all the amazing characters that have made Fables so enjoyable over the I’ll have to choose…hmm…this is tough. But I’ll say Boy Blue, I have to admit back in issue #1 he was nothing special, but with Fables: The Last Castle he became one of my favorites. The backstory and his attitude combined to make a character that you couldn’t help but love. Then, through his trials and tribulations in March of the Wooden Soldiers and Homelands he became even greater in my eyes. But it was with his death in The Dark Ages that he solidified his greatness, his final speech was heart-wrenching stuff, his life was a tragedy.

Really great character…I would gladly join Stinky’s religion in honor of Boy Blue.

  22. biffbampow says on :

I’m going to have to go with Bigby Wolf. Not only is he the archetypal sheriff with a heart of gold, he’s also a bad-ass wolf. Plus, his WWII story was perfect.

  23. jidasfire says on :

I must go with Flycatcher, aka Prince Ambrose. His tragic story, good nature, and rise to messianic hero probably saved the Fables from being annihilated by the Adversary’s forces, and he still manages to do janitorial work and collect comics in between running a kingdom of ghosts and reformed villains. Hard to top that.

  24. scalida says on :

I’m tempted to say Snow White. I don’t think there are enough strong women in American comics. But really it has to be her sister Rose. Even though she’s not as capital-S strong as Snow is, she’s the character who has grown the most without losing their identity. It doesn’t hurt that most people know nothing at all about her prior to the comics.

  25. angshaw says on :

Charming! When I read about him in WIZARD a long time ago the idea that Prince Charming was just a philanderer who got off on damsels in distress made me laugh.

  26. kevhines says on :

I have to say Prince Charming. Sure he’s a jerk and horribly despicable when it comes to the ladies, but watching him come into his own when deciding what he wanted was to beat the Adversary was an amazing piece of growth. I am sure when he ever returns (a popular Fable like that won’t stay dead) he’ll go back to his old ways. But I also know that when the need is great he can get the job down in a very unique way that is so”Fables”.

  27. ericanaone says on :

Bigby Wolf is my favorite. I’m a total sucker for the reformed villain. Echoing some of those above, the Snow/Bigby romance is what sucked me into the series in the first place.

  28. jubdafoot says on :

I’ve got to go with Ambrose/Flycatcher as my favorite. He started off as such a seemingly limited comic relief character and just became so much more. You discover his tragic history, which he has to come to terms with to have a future and become who he’s meant to be. He falls in love. He also has the best moment in the series, that slight haunting glance of a possible future.

  29. bennorwood says on :

My favorite character is Hobbes, the goblin butler. He treads the fine line between cleanliness and chaos; as a throwaway character who only occasionally appears in Fables, his fully-developed personality is a testament to the creativity of Messrs Willingham and Buckingham. Reasons:

#1: He possesses an unblemished glamour record outside the Woodland building.

#2: Very good at waking Prince Charming in the middle of the night during a Fabletown emergency, no matter how many fine womens his honor is sleeping with.

#3: Able to toss aside his servitude and contest with trolls when it serves the greater good.

#4: A plague upon shifty snooping illegitimate mouse police, with no peer.

#5: Capable of switching loyalties when it’s clear that his ship is sinking.

#6: Came up with the idea of a Fabletown flag, which won Prince Charming the mayoral election, which led to Charming declaring war against the Empire and winning, which means that for want of a nail, Hobbes guaranteed the end of the Adversary.

  30. bradgrenz says on :

My favorite character is Flycatcher and has been ever since we learned his tragic backstory in 1001 Nights of Snowfall. His tale is one of the most moving things I’ve ever encountered in a “comic”. Just beautiful and heartbreaking.

  31. neilcameron says on :

    Cindy.
I think the issue with Ichabod Crane was my all time favorite until Blue went into the Homelands.

I’ve felt her character is the most interesting as she maintains her double life over all the years. Plus her running the Glass Slipper shoe store was just too perfect.
Her rescue of Pinocchio was also pretty great. I cant wait to read from fabletown with love.

    -neil cameron

  32. billmeeks says on :

I want to say Pinocchio, just because he’s a grumpy, old, young, innocent character. But if you put a gun to my head I’d have to say Flycatcher. His journey from gag-giving background character to ultimate hero and blatant Messiah figure is probably the most interesting journey any Fable has taken. The tragedy of his background coupled with his long-awaited salvation from it was gripping, emotional, personal, and epic.

  33. ks123 says on :

My favorite character might be Cinderella. Shoe store owner by day, crazy bad-ass assassin by night. But in reality, I love every character in Fables. There’s something very cool about twisted takes on childhood characters. Well done, Bill Willingham! Looking forward to Peter & Max.

  34. r28chris86 says on :

Favorite character(s) have to be all 7 “woflets.” They are all so cute and I love how each one has his/her own personality and unique trait. I can’t wait for them to have their own spin-off one day and become full-fledged characters in the series. I thoroughly enjoy every scene they are in and would love to see more of em in the future once they get older.

  35. cjscampbell says on :

My favorite character of the series would have to be one of the “main characters”, though i have numerous favorites among the smaller players, and no that doesnt mean the Lilliputians. Out of the main players my favorite would have to be Boy Blue. He does it all. He was Snow’s assistant in the administration office when we first met him but he reached higher then that. The tale of the last castle is the sweetest/most depressing story in fables second only to the origin of Fly. And Blue kicked ass when he traveled into the Homelands himself and faced the elite forces of the Adversary, all the time holding the upper hand. Hes a true friend to Fly, Pinocchio, and Bufkin. He plays a mean horn, even though old jazz hands don’t think he’s suffered enough. But he has. Blues been unlucky in love. He fell for Red Riding Hood (RRH#1) at the Last Castle and was heartbroken at their O. Henry-ian fate, never able to find her again. He was used by the fake RRH who was actually Baba Yaga, though he took his revenge on her knights. And found heartbreak again with the real Red Riding Hood, but he’s happy for Fly. And what to say about him and Rose Red? That girl is afraid of nice guys. But she came around after Blue got injured in the war against the adversary, saving Bigby’s life!, and that injury proved fatal because if Blue was still alive no one would be scared of Mr. Dark. And now he has a sweet cult/religion full of talking animals. Talking Animals!

  36. jrsavitski says on :

Despite how many characters I enjoy, Boy Blue is my favorite. His arc with the Adversary was outstanding, and downright brutal at some points; it seemed like he never quite recovered from it. Had someone told me how key Boy Blue would be when I was reading the early issues, I would have thought you crazy. To Boy Blue, a solid character who did what needed to be done and died a hero. Hope he comes back someday!

  37. daschupa says on :

Mine would have to be Ghost just because he is memorable and cute. Sure he killed a lot of people, but it wasn’t his fault, poor lil guy.

  38. ticknart says on :

As with so many others here my favorite character is Flycatcher.

The main reason I like his so much is because he’s just a guy. He cleans floors. He goes to movies with his friends. And he slowly falls in love with Red Riding Hood.

I like that his guilt was so strong that he turned back into a frog, but when he was once again released from his curse he decided that he could move beyond his past and began to find a way to begin to forgive himself for what happened to his family.

I like how Fly became more than he believed he deserved to be or thought he could be.

I like that he’s self-aware enough to know that there’s possible darkness in his future.

Basically, Flycatcher’s my favorite character because despite all the amazing things that happened to him and he’s done for himself, and others, he’s one of the most good-natured and human characters in fiction.

  39. stinsonfly says on :

I would have to say my favorite character is Bigby. Who doesn’t love a man that is the strong, silent type with a dark, bad side, who can pretty much take care of any problem that arises (and whoopin the crap out of whoever he is against), and also sticks around to raise the kidlets?

  40. allent says on :

Honestly, that is a hard one to pick just one (especially when an arc can reveal something new about a character, but overall I would have to say Blue. Not only his tragic arc (not only he lose his lady love, but it turns out to be fake because the original has no idea who he is, and thats after any other pretended to be her, but his other love is unrequited until it is way too late), to his hidden badassry, to the dangers of even a superficial wound. I kept expecting them to save him right up to the end.

  41. lanzajr26 says on :

My favorite character would have to be Boy Blue, and this has only been strengthened after the events in the Dark Ages TPB.

I would have never guessed Blue to be the one to single-handedly storm the Emperor’s throne and risk his life to assassinate Geppetto, let alone have the will and pride to put Rose in her place while he lay on his death bed.

  42. liemtran says on :

Favorite character from Fables is Flycatcher for sure. Starting with the first few issues, he was such a lowly but lovable janitor and simpleton despite his classic moniker of being title the Frog Prince. But then came along 1001 Nights of Snowfall and his back story was revealed and, man oh man, was that intense. The suppressed memories he had to live through again when he had been told of his future was the start of my favorite story arc of how he reclaimed his title is the epitome of nobility. And then he plays baseball with his subjects.

  43. storytimecrime says on :

I used to be a random comic book reader. Occassionally would pick up a recommended trade paperback but only the best of the best. When someone recomended Fables, I was firsr drawn to Bigby. His dark brooding nature reminded me so much of those bad ass good guys from mainstream comics. He made my transition effortless and now Fables is my favorite comic.

  44. clmcshane says on :

Even though I’m not eligible for the post I still have to post:

Bufkin the Blue Monkey is my fave
Even if sometimes the booze he does crave

In the Business Office he does lots of works
Even if PC and Beauty stiff him on his perks

As he flies and catalogues Fabletown’s books
He is smarter and braver than he looks

For his friends, he would brave anything
For his enemies, he has poop to fling

His valor and heroism is underrated
His antics I wait for with breath baited

Many fantastic characters are amongst the rest.
But in Fables, Bufkin is the very best.

  45. jackofalltrades says on :

    Jack of Fables.

I was introduced to the Fables series a mere nine months ago, but have religiously read every single issue of both Fables and Jack’s spin-off right up to the most recent issue. True, I haven’t been engrossed infected with Fable-itis as long as some, or since the series’ inception many years ago. Nevertheless, it’s easy to see why Jack of Fables is by far the most important character (as well as my personal favorite)…

Name Recognition. First, Jack is perhaps the most ubiquitous and recognized ‘rascal’ among the pantheon of Western literature’s fable and folklore scoundrels, rogues, and schemers. Every culture has some version of a Jack tale.

Stamina. Jack has withstood centuries of telling, cross-telling, re-telling, trans and inter-continental migrations, and even a well-warranted Wicked John. No other of Mr. Willingham’s characters (as of yet) have discovered the existence of their double. Jack’s stories are so magnificent and so essential that we need an evil twin character just to help carry the tales along!

Continuity. True, Jack left and was thereafter banished from Fabletown (until very recently). But, he did not disappear from our lives. Instead, he re-appeared in his very own eponymous series. How very Jack of him! He has appeared with nearly every character that has graced the pages of the author’s pages — with the exception of a few — and continues to show up in others’ tales — even if in a flashback. The vast majority of Fables characters have been effected (directly or indirectly) by Jack.

License. What other Fables character has led the charged escape from Golden Boughs, starred in his own box-office smash hit movie trilogy, AND slept with all three Page sisters??? None! And, just who does he think he is?
Why, Jack of Fables, of course!

Purpose. So, where does that leave us? Fabletown lies in ruins. Our heroes are about to face an unknown enemy that frightens even Frau Totenkinder. Once again, all seems lost…

    Enter Jack of Fables.

  46. inkwellspring says on :

My favorite Fables character would have to be Flycatcher for being so mellow and yet ending up having the pivotal role to play in The Good Prince story.

  47. islandboy says on :

My favourite character is Rose Red. I loved how her character developed from this crazy wild child in the first story arc to this more responsible leader of the Farm. Animal Farm is my favourite story arc in Fables. Besides who could resist a redhead?

  48. kmansell says on :

Rose Red is my favorite fables character. Mostly because she reminds me so much of my sister. Me and my sister are exact opposites, much like snow & rose (except I look like rose, and my sister looks more like snow). We’ve had are issues in the past, much like Rose & Snow, but she’s my closest friend, and we equal each other out perfectly. So, I feel a little bit of that sisterly bond to Rose Red, too, because of that.

(Excellent poem, Cindy, although I love the original too! ;D )

  49. comicbookrealm says on :

Can I choose Bigby as well? The hookup of Snow and Bigby sealed the deal for me.

  50. heathdaddio says on :

Flycatcher really came out of nowhere as a great character. His journey is heartbreaking and full of awesome.

I also enjoy the portrayals of Mowgli, Sinbad and Rose Red. Thanks to the Fables creators for all the excellent characters.

  51. gambit410 says on :

Who cant think Bumpkin is the best, im just wait for the butt kicking he’ll lay down in the next issue!

  52. matt says on :

Man, it is hard for me to imagine a cooler character than Bigby, not just in Fables but anyplace.

  53. candlejack says on :

The problem with having such a well rounded cast is that it is extremely hard for me to play favorites. I would love to easily yell that Boy Blue is my number one, but then I remember about Flycatcher and Pinocchio. And Prince Charming, this guy is such a jerk, yet he has such a suave air about himself that it’s hard not to be pulled into the cult of personality.

But if I had to choose one of my favorite characters it has to be Hansel. Why? Because that man is stone cold evil. While some of the members of the Adversary’s heads of state were cold (no pun intended) he was the only one mean enough to kill his own sister. I don’t know why he’s my favorite, but all the scenes that he’s in are much more tense just because of his presence. Also the cover to Fables 54 is probably one of my favorite comic covers of all time.

  54. megafone says on :

My favorite character is Frau Totenkinder; I love how she’s manipulating the situations of Fables everywhere with the exterior of an grandmother, and the interior of a wretched schemer.

  55. animanifesto says on :

Bigby is pretty awesome, i like the cubs too.

  56. hackdedables says on :

    Oo! Oo!
    Bigby Wolf!!
    Do I win?
    No?
    Well then forget this.
And tell that overblown grannyball he can bite me.
    ~J.H.

Seriously though, Mr. Dark because its high time Fables got the creeps.

  57. yarkmu says on :

Charming. Fables does an amazing job of subverting the back-stories of all the iconic storybook characters in general, but Charming is in class by himself–twisted, hilarious, and well, charming.

  58. ecogirl says on :

Chosing a favorite fables character is really difficult, it’s like chosing your favorite child! But since it has to be done in order to continue my Fables fix, I would have to say my favorite is Boy Blue all the way! I’m definitely a romantic, and I loved Snow and Bigby’s story from the first time that Bigby saw Snow in the chains of the Adversary’s prisoner march- I still love Blue more! His story is legendary. He returned to face the Advesary alone without any mind to the consequences of his actions, and he did it all for the love of Ride. Unfortunately, he did not find the woman he fell in love with the night before he fought the Adversary in that last fateful day before he was exiled- but in the end, that doesn’t matter because this was one of the best story arcs of all time! And who couldn’t deny the power and joy of when Blue uses the Vorpral sword to do a little “Snickity-snak”!

  59. Joey Gee says on :

Yes, Bigby Wolf is the popular answer, but that’s with good reason. From the start he had that kind of swagger that all great characters have and to see him develop throughout the series from a hard boiled-down on his luck wolf into a man who loves his well deserved family and would do anything to protect them. And yes, he’s still hard boiled. That’s the thing: he stayed great the whole time but became better with time, a fine example of a guy you’d want in your corner and would totally hang with. But you’ve got to earn Bigby’s company, and it takes hard work to be worthy. A life to I would personally be lucky to live. Go team Bigby!

  60. warrenpeace says on :

I will say Flycatcher, although it’s a tough choice. He’s such a tragic figure, after what happened to him in the Homelands, and he went through centuries of denial before finally embracing his place and becoming one of the most powerful characters in the series. But he’s still his same old self, content to wear his dumpy clothes and hang out with his friends even though he rules a kingdom.

  61. zorak says on :

I’ve always liked Beast. He’s an easygoing, understated guy who has the thankless job of replacing Bigby as sheriff. He works to avoid killing and to avoid angering his fellows. He also made a successful alliance with Frau Totenkinder on good manners alone. Plus, he’s been happily married for hundreds of years. How many people can say that?

Flycatcher is my favorite character. His rise from a lowly janitor who was ashamed of his past to the King of Haven was one of the best parts of the series. The fact that his flaws are not from failure to achieve fame or glory, but from bearing the weight of guilt of not being able to save his family and from the sadness of surviving shows that he’s a very different character, one that seems more human than most of the rest of the cast(not that they’re bad characters!). When he survived the battle with the wooden soldiers, it was a genuinely happy moment because he would get the reward of living in peace, even if it was just for a short while.

As much as I would love to say Bigby, I think Snow probably takes my vote.

I choose Rose Red, for her ability to remain herself in every situation and her spontaneous spirit!

Boy Blue is my favorite fables character because he was the first brave and totally badass guy to take the fight to the adversary’s empire. Boy Blue with the Vorpal sword and Witching cloak was awesome.

I’m gonna go with Cinderella…the fascinating turn from what she was in traditional fables into a super spy is fascinating

My favorite’s Boy Blue, he can do it all… office clerk, crusading adventurer, musician, hero!

Cinderella, just because she’s a sort of cross between Bruce Wayne and Tara Chace.

While we love Clara and Bufkin the surprise favourite for me is Pinocchio! Been a great character through out, really enjoyed his look and attitude from the beginning and have enjoyed his consistency through out the series, would like to see him a bit more please!

I really enjoy Fly Catcher. From his sad beginnings of the death of his family, to his self imposed punishment of being a janitor, to redeeming himself as leader of his own kingdom. Not only did his personality and confidence change, but his psychical appearance slowly became more distinct as he became bolder. I liked seeing a once background character come into his own.

Easy: Gepetto. I just loved the twist, which was one of those “I saw it coming so early that I knew it couldn’t be true, but then it was and it totally blew my mind” things.

My favorite character is probably Bigby. You’ve got to love the gruff dude who always acts like he doesn’t care about anything, but deep down he really does.

  73. alasana says on :

Snow has been my very favorite character since issue one. From unofficially running Fabletown to her romance with Bigby to motherhood on the Farm, Snow has remained a force to be reckoned with and one of the most well-developed characters in the book. She’s tough, smart, quick-witted and all around awesome. :)

My favorite character is Rose Red. She always defies expectations. She’s a brilliant character who loves to take charge and to make things her own. I think she is by far the best character brought to life in Fables.

  75. fatesedge says on :

Clara, the fire breathing raven who was transformed from a dragon by spell. That alone grabs my attention and has my mind stirring. She doesnt get much coverage which leads her to be extremly mysterious, yet its what i do know about her that i find facinating. Behind the watchful mischievous exterior is a powerful beast, she has so much potential. I hope we all get the chance to know her alot more :)

My favorite Fables Character is Boy Blue. Who doesn’t love a creative genius with a bad ass sword? He’s likable (dare I say lovable?) but not a push over or a wuss. He’s a great friend and a stout defender. Of course, I’m on the trades, so I could be behind the times, but I goes by what I knows.

    Boy Blue, definitely.

I have loved Ozma since I read the Land of Oz as a kid.

  78. garp444 says on :

My favorite character, this is quite the tough one, would have to be (at this particular second: Cinderella. I love the idea that this girly girl from the original story who literally sat home and waited for her prince to come and find her has now spent the centuries turning herself into a super-spy. The complete transformation of the character is just conceptually very cool for me. Completely representative of this is the storyline with her heading to South America to pick up “the package.”

My favorite character is Bigby. He’s a giant mystery that is constantly unravelling.

  80. mpainter says on :

My favorite character, although tough, is Frau Totenkinder. Very inconspicuous when we first meet her, Frau Totenkinder has become a character to watch for, in good and bad, in Fables. After her infamous battle with Baba Yaga in March of the Wooden Soldiers, Frau Totenkinder became the ultimate powerplayer no one could expect. Although her role of power in the sorceror’s floor no remains in doubt, Frau Totenkinder is an anti-hero who just is a reminder to readers that there worst enemies Fabletown could make are not from the outside in the realm of the Adversary, but actually within their own ranks. I cannot wait to see more of Frau Totenkinder, in all her forms.

For me, it has to be Reynard the fox. Although he’s rarely a central character for any period of length, his trickster nature makes him a very versatile character to tell any number of stories with. Throughout the story so far, Reynard’s appearances have shown him to be cunning, noble, manipulative, jealous and loving in equal measure.

My favourite Reynard story is ‘Christmas Pies’ where we see the crafty fox use his selfish trickster traits for the greater good by pulling off a confidence trick on the Gobs to both feed and save the other woodland animals.

In some ways, Reynard’s clever use of story telling and his ability to bend and embellish the truth to suit his means is reminiscent of the very oral tradition that the Fables universe itself is based on. I like to think of Reynard as Bill’s nod to the true origins of the stories.
